“Seeds trapped within the cloth wrappings during the embalming process,” Batgirl said, her detective’s mind filling in the gaps. She could imagine seeds and spores in the air becoming part of the layers of cloth, slowly entwined around the bodies during the mummification ritual. “Ready to sprout at your command.”

Ivy nodded, her eyes flashing with mischief as she strode toward the trapped crime fighter. “Isn’t it delightful? So deliciously macabre. I wish you could have seen your face when my little friends lumbered out of their tombs. You must have thought you’d triggered the Pharaoh’s curse.”

“I wasn’t the one who stole the rose,” Batgirl reminded Ivy, her eyes flicking up to the shadows behind the gloating villain. “But I have to say, I’m impressed. Creating puppets out of corpses? That’s a good trick. There’s only one thing I don’t understand….”

Poison Ivy snorted. “There is? Well, let’s have it before my bandaged bodyguards give you a nice, tight squeeze.”

Batgirl ignored the threat and nodded to the space behind Ivy. “Mummies are one thing, but how are you doing that?

Ivy’s smile fell away as the floor creaked behind her. She turned, staggering back in shock, her hand going to her mouth. The giant golden Sphinx, once so awe-inspiring on its magnificent pedastal was slowly stalking toward her, its eyes blazing red.

“Who dares disturb the treasures of great Nefarutek?” it boomed, its voice echoing like thunder across the millenia. “Who invokes the curse of the Desert Rose?”

“That’s—that’s not possible,” Ivy stammered, jumping away as a huge golden paw rose over her head, threating to come smashing down.

“It is you!” the monster roared, its scarlet eyes focusing on the stolen bloom in Ivy’s hair. “You shall pay for your crimes. You shall be doomed for all time!”

“Not today!” Ivy shouted back, pointing a long finger at the golden sentinel. “Not ever! Attack!”

At her command, the mummies released Batgirl and lumbered toward the monster. The Sphinx roared, knocking the first bandaged figure away with a swipe of a gigantic paw. It smashed into a display of funeral urns, reducing the priceless pottery to dust, but the rest of the mummies kept coming. The Sphinx beat its huge wings, but the mummies held on, vines sprouting from the seeds that animated them. Soon the Sphinx was swathed in a green net that tightened around its massive body, its wings flattened and its legs bound tight. With one final bellow, the gigantic guardian crashed to its side, shaking the very foundations of the building as it fell.

Batgirl didn’t have to tell Poison Ivy to run. The green-fingered criminal was already racing for the exit, her hand holding the stolen rose in place.

“There is no escape,” the downed sentinel growled, opening its mouth and roaring so loud that the skylight above them shattered into a thousand razor-sharp shards. Batgirl threw her cape over her head to protect herself from the falling glass, but she wasn’t prepared for the stream of scarabs that spewed from the Sphinx’s open mouth.
